Easy Paper Christmas Classroom Decorations

Decorating your classroom on a show string budget! My students LOVE to walk in and see new things around the classroom. For the holidays I always try and add something new. This year, my challenge was to create some festive cheer with practical no money.

Here’s what I came up with:

Self Standing Paper Trees

Umbre Cone Trees

According Folded Paper Trees

Paint Chip Sample- Christmas Lights

Candy Cane Paper Chain

It’s such a little joy to see their faces light up with such small touches around the room. Of course, these paper crafts could be done around the house just as easily- and the best part… they’re practical free!

Family Joy Blog Linky Party #46

Washi Tape Ornaments

Raise your hand if you love washi tape! Washi tape ornaments are a fun way to bring color, pattern and variety to your tree.

diy-ornaments

Gather your supplies:

*Box of clear ornaments
*Package of washi tape
*Optional- package of glistening snow to put inside

I bought all my stuff from Michael’s, on sale and with a coupon of course 😉

I came across a Christmas pack with variations of teal and blue, which fits into my color scheme perfectly. In the cart it went, next to the package of ornaments.

washi-tape

First, I wanted something inside each ornament, so I poured the snow inside. I actually liked to hollowness of them but ultimately decided to give the eye a little more to look at.

Next, layout those rolls of tape. i like to have a clear visual on all my resources 🙂 Depending on how many roles you have- there can be many color and design combinations.

My daughter and I made these together which was fun really fun because we inspired each other to create new patterns and color combos.

I did choose to wrap the washi tape slightly overlapping itself to ensure it wouldn’t un-peel.

I like the idea of making each one unique, but another option would be to make a uniform set. You could even make a package and give them away as a gift!

Easy Christmas Cabinet Decor

cabinet-reindeer

When I decorate for Christmas, I like to add a touch of Christmas in every room. That of course includes the kitchen! But there’s a faint colored yellow paint on my kitchen walls that I’m not in love with. But when adding in traditional Christmas yellow, it became an- in your face school bus yellow kinda paint lining the walls. I decided to ditch the cute glisting red and white candy canes and search for a color that would compliment instead.
Basically, the Kitchen- 1 and Crystal-0

reindeer-head

That was until I found myself randomly on one of the many Christmas aisles in Micheal’s. Yes, there they were, glitter covered reindeer heads on a stick. With their sale and my coupon they turned out to be just about $1 a piece. I counted up enough for each of my cabinet doors and headed over to the ribbon section.
I loved this simple burlap one with snowflakes.

Once you have everything gathered, you’ll want to measure the ribbon length so the reindeer heads hang exactly where you want them.

reindeer-and-ribbon

Then hot glue the head onto the end of the ribbon. Now it’s time to hang the ribbon onto of the cabinet door. I used green frog time so it wouldn’t peel any paint off.
Now stand back and admire the classy cuteness, all for about $10  😉

Christmas Kindness Advent Calendar

Christmas Kindness Advent Calendar is a fun way to get everyone in the family involved!

december-advent-calendar

The heart of this came from my classroom last year when I was trying to think of ways to inspire my students to perform acts of kindness through out the month of December.
This year, I’ve brought the challenge home- and you can too.

Here’s what you’ll need:
*A Big Frame (I used a 11×14 but you could use an 8×10 as well)
*Letter Stickers (I opted for glitter letters because, I wanted a little shimmer)
*Wrapping Paper… this is my favorite part because it really sets the tone for the whole thing. Make it sutle or bold and beautiful. I found the perfect roll of paper that brought the blues in my home and red together in harmony.
*Mini Clothespins (I bought mine months ago from TJ Max)
*Numbers/Colored Paper

Scroll down to see some suggestions of acts of kindness

Start with your large frame. Don’t ya just love white frames- they are so versatile. Add your wrapping paper (just like wrapping a piece of cardboard) and then admire your mad wrapping skills!

calendar

Think of your tag word. I had a couple in mind, and finally settle on “merry” because, well- it worked with the letters I had and we all know sometimes ya gotta work with what ya have, right!

I thought it was a twist to add it to the side instead of a traditional title at top. Figure out what works best for you. I applied the large letters directly on top if the glass because I wanted a layer look.

Next, you’ll want to layout your clothespins and numbers. I always like to lay things out before I glue them, I’ve learned the hard way- poor planning can be a project killer.

Once everything is spaced to your liking, hot glue those oh so cute mini clothes pin down on top of the glass.december-kindness-advent-calendar

Now here’s the best part, brain storm ideas for your family to show kindness! Think BIG and SMALL, so you can randomly mix it up.

Here’s some ideas
-Buy a meal for a homeless person
-Do a household chore for a family member
-Pay for the person’s food/drink in the car behind you in the drive thru
-Donate a bag of bones or toys to the animal shelter
-Text someone a bible verse and let them know you are praying for them
-Pick a trusted charity and donate $10 (or more)
– Offer someone a 5 minute neck massage
-Take a person’s name from an angel tree and buy them a present
-Go to the beach or park and pick up trash
-Donate clothes you out grew to Salvation Army, or Goodwill
-Let someone else choose the family movie for Friday family date
-Hand select some winter warmth (hat, gloves, jacket or blanket) and find someone who could use it
-Give the dog a walk twice as long as you normally do
-Sign up to volunteer your time
-Gather up old books and donate them to your local library or school
-Make cookies and share them with your teacher or co-workers
-Surprise…keep you eyes open today and find a way to show kindness

By having ideas written down it really does help you focus and commit to simple, manageable ways to share kindness and joy.

If you have more ideas, I’d love to hear them!

Paper Bag Banner

This paper bag garland is an easy project that you can pull together in less than 20 minutes!

paper-bag-banner

You probably already have the items you need, so let’s get them together.
You’ll need:

bag-banner

-Package of paper bags (I opted for a “fancy” pack with subtle gold polka dots from Michael’s- $1.50 with coupon)
-Twine or ribbon
-Scissors
See, I told ya it was super easy!

First decide what you want to say. I tinkered back and forth with a couple different expressions, then finally decided to keep it simple…. GIVE

thanksgiving-banner

I choose to free hand the letters because, well, I’m a little impatient and don’t yet have an amazing circuit machine (maybe Santa is reading this and making a note- wink wink)

After tracing the letters, it’s back to the basics. Cut out your letters. I always like to make a tiny pinch right in the middle and cut there, then work my way around the pencil marks.
Another idea would be to place scrapbook paper behind the letters for a pop of color or more festival themed looked. But I liked the simple look of this one, I think I’ll color it up for my next one though!

Now, if you like the pendent look as I do, you’ll want to trim the bottom. The best way to get an even finish on all your letter bags is actually very simple! Stack them on top of each other, and make ONE cut down the middle from the bottom (about 2 inches). Now, unstack them so you are working one at a time. Since our middle cut was the same on all the bags, now all you need to do it cut from the corner to the top of that center cut. Repeat for the opposite corner. Hopefully that makes sense. With following the couple steps your banner will have a complete symmetry… oh how I love symmetry!

To finish it off, you can simply hang the lip of the bags over the twine or you can glue them onto the twine itself. Once it was hung, I threw a couple pieces of tied fabric to add a little contrast.

This paper bag banner is such a quick, easy and super low cost way to add a customized decoration for any occasion.

Family Joy Blog Link Party #42

It’s here, it’s finally here! November that is, the month where it is socially acceptable to start decorating for Christmas 😉 I’ve pulled out the tubs of decorations and made my list of all my projects to start on asap! Hopefully I can remain ahead of the curve this year because time seems to go so fast once we hit November, right?!
On this this weeks par-tay… can’t wait to see what you’ve all been working on.
