How to Create the Perfect Gift Basket

How to create the perfect gift basket!

I love a good gift basket, I mean if I have the chance to whip up a basket for someone or something I am giddy inside. So I thought I would share with you some of my secrets to creating a stellar gift basket.

I’ll start by laying out these easy steps, then I’ll go into more detail.

  1. Set a budget! By far, this is the hardest step for me but a wise first step!
  2. Pick a theme.
  3. Go shopping. You’re looking multiple inexpensive items, a couple more expensive items and one most expensive item.
  4. While shopping, be looking out for your “basket” This doesn’t have to actually be a basket, but any sort of container than you can put your items into.
  5. Grab some cellophane and ribbon to complete your gift basket with a beautiful finish.

*Alright, let’s dive into what to buy and how much to spend. The dollar section is your friend. The great thing about a gift basket, it has so many little gifts and goodies that you don’t single out something as “cheap” because it’s presented in a group setting.
Whether your shopping at the Dollar Tree, or the dollar section at Target, you have 2 goals. Buy things that go with your theme, and things that don’t actually look like you spent $1. I like to call these my filler items. Depending on the size of your basket, you may want to spend up to $10 on these small filler items.

*Now, you’re looking for a couple medium sized items. Again, it all depends on your overall budget. I would typically spend anywhere between $3-15 on my medium priced items.

*Next your looking for the star of the show- the one item that you are planning to spend the most on. This could even be the “basket”. Maybe it’s a really nice new pot for them to cook in, or a gift for a meal out.
-If you wanted to instead, you could add 4-5 medium priced items instead of 1 star of the show.

*Find the perfect container. It’s a myth that it has to be a basket! Get creative. What could you get that would go with the theme?
I would buy a tool box for a gift basket for someone who loves tools, garage stuff, new home owner, etc. Or a tackle box filled with goodies for the fisherman. You get the idea, almost anything can become a basket. When all else fails, check the dollar store for an inexpensive small plastic tub that would highlight everything inside. Then spend the money on the items inside.

Now that your shopping is done, lay out your items on the table.
You’ll group the items based on their size.
Prep your basket by lining the inside with filler, I love the dollar store paper shred(I know it must be clear at how much I love the dollar store). They literally have the same stuff as Micheal’s and Walmart for a fraction of the price. I like my money to be spend on the items that the person can enjoy, not the paper shred that will get thrown out 🙂

Grab your biggest items and layer them in the back of the container. Work your way forward with the medium sized items, and then fill in the front with your small things. Now you’ll want to save a few of those small items to tuck in through the basket to complete the “full” look.

Almost done! Have you heard the importance of first impressions??
Wrap that beautiful baby up with clear cellophane. Want to know where I get mine at? Yep, you guessed it… the dollar store. Walmart has the same roll for $4!
Finish the look with a beautiful ribbon tied in a bow. It should look so pretty and professional they may hesitate to even want to open it.
Honestly, I always get compliments on my gift baskets and I’m ONLY saying this because when you give a thoughtful, beautiful gift basket- it shows! The person on the other end can see your effort and really will appreciate your creation.

What a week! I have been in full basket making mode for my daughter’s school fundraiser. Look for my post next week about how to make the perfect basket 🙂 I was so excited to drop them off at school and be apart of a great team of parents and teachers to pull together for the love of the school and the kids. Today will be the much needed day of rest mixed together with cleaning . What about you, did you have a jam packed week too?

Easy Tripod Lamp

Easy Tripod Lamp!

I’ve seen these fab lamps all over and I love them. But they can break the bank easily reaching $100. We don’t spend that much on a lamp in this house so I decided to whip up an easy DIY.

Gather the supplies and let’s get started.

I found this light kit at Home Depot, do you know what I was giddy to see… silver/nickel finished! Make your stores are different but I’ve been looking for a little while now at lamp kits and they have all been gold finish. I love the silver look, so that’s what you’ll find through our home.

Lamp shade– I found this one at Target on sale for $7. I’m not sure why it was on clearance, but sometimes it’s just best not to ask right?! It was in perfect shape 🙂

Tripod– set the tone for the lamp with this piece. I was on a mission to find one with character. Simplistic but unique, so at the flea market I found this one. Oh I also had in my mind I wanted to spend only $10 on it as well. Anyone else ever do that? I come up with a vision and set a standard then search for something to fit within that lol. Sometimes I think I should do it the other way around.

You can see this tripod I found had some rubber feet, and a really vintage top. One of the best parts about making a tripod light was the fact you can easily transition it into a table lamp because the legs are adjustable! What other cool DIY lamp can do that?
I’m not going to lie I was slightly intimidated by a light kit but really just follow the directions and you’ll be good 🙂

In the end, I spend a total of about $30 on all the pieces, much better than dishing out $100 for sure!

Wow and I glad this week has come to an end! I locked myself out of the house, we had a major water leak through the ceiling and no air conditioner with temps in the 90’s. Now, we welcome a new full week where after school activities resume and I’m prepping for the school carnival. Looking forward to seeing your latest posts!
Remember to share and comment so that we make it fun for everyone 🙂

Lessons My Tween Daughter Has Taught Me

Lessons My Tween Daughter Has Taught Me

Be Generous

I’m picking her up from camp and I hear her quietly say to her friend beside her, let me ask my mom. Then she turns to me and says “Mom, can I please loan my friend some money, she really wants to buy this and she doesn’t have enough?” I stop and think about it, asked some basic questions- how much, for how long, etc. Right there… me thinking through it… why was I thinking so hard. It was her money, well technically it was my money that I gave to her to use for her camp experience. Clearly she had money left over and she without hesitation was willing and wanting to help out a friend. There wasn’t some deep thought process involved, instead it was love and kindness, friendship and generous that soared to the top and made this a no brainer for her. What a beautiful expression on her part. I wasn’t going to stand in the way, I was going to learn from her!

Share
As I looked through pictures, I pointed out that one of the other girls had the same exact shirt that daughter had. I didn’t think much of it until I heard “No Mom, that’s actually my shirt I let her borrow. She needed something to match the leggings she wanted to wear that day.” I paused and thought, would I do that? Would I loan a friend a shirt just because she wanted something to match not because she needed too. The answer, yes if she was a very close friend. Just a loose acquiesce probably not. But that didn’t stop my daughter, this wasn’t a bestie or even a close friend. The idea of sharing your clothes, belongings, money all while thinking first of the other person… well, it really is a lesson. It seems like we as adults can add in so much “additional” thinking that just isn’t there when you’re younger. The reality is- we often “learn” to add in that extra layer. But what if instead “learned” from our kids’ simplicity?

Faithfullness
Of course we’ve shared with our daughter the foundation of faith. Yet recently I was in awe at how she seemed to grasped a concept that I have been struggling with. I believe as a mature Christian you come to a place where your prayers are surrendering to God’s will. Sharing your heart with Him, making your requests and pleas but ultimately realizing HE is in control and knows what lies ahead. There has been something going on within our family, something completely out of our control. We are emotional, physical and spiritually invested. I know what I want, what our family wants, I know what looks black and white right and wrong in this situation. I know how devastating things would be if God didn’t answer our prayers. But my daughter, knowing all this… prayed the other day… “God your will be done…” there was more prayer before that sentence and more after but that was really the just of it. The concept of whatever happens, the comfort she felt in believing those words.
There it was, this internal struggle I have of knowing and wanting and requesting, sometimes even begging… for God to hear my prayer. She’s already grasped it, the step outside of herself to surrender to His plan. Wow!

Be Fearless
I’m amazed at how I watch my daughter I see her fearlessness in everyday situations. How she approaches animals, people, new social environments and so much more with a calmness. She takes the situation for what it is, not how I see it. I realized by watching her I ADD fear into so many things, too many really. Not only a mom fear, but a fear that comes from “what ifs” and past experiences. Here’s the thing though, I watch her enjoy moments to the fullest. Fear really does rob us. I mean let’s be real, most of the time those “fearful” thoughts produce nothing. They don’t protect, they don’t add anything, and we’re flat out told in the bible DO NOT FEAR. For me, it is one decision at a time to release the fear. And if I don’t… it could influence her, change how she views and processes things in the future. Let’s be clear, I’m not talking about eliminating safety and precaution. Those are necessary. I’m talking about all the extra we add into the mix that usually doesn’t need to be there.

DIY Silk Screen Kids T-Shirt

Everyone seems to be DIY silk screening t shirts, and I was feeling left out! And Easter is right around the corner so I thought now would be a perfect time to create something cute.

I’ve seen a few different options but the pantyhose and embroidery hoop looked to be the easiest.

Here’s what you’ll need:
*Embroidery hoop (big enough for your design to fit inside)
*Fabric paint and paint brush
*1 pair of pantyhose
*Sharpie
*Mod podge
*Tshirt

I was seriously so excited to get started on this project. Surely you’ve been there, seen something online and wondered if your version was going to turn out as pretty as their pictures!

Follow these easy steps…

First– You’ll need to put your pantyhose through the embroidery hoop. Simply snip down one side and it will be like a flat piece of material. Tip- Make sure you pull tight and evenly BUT slowly so you don’t snag.

Second– Make a template. I actually traced a real peep! I ended up with the perfect outline. I wanted 3 in the center so I arranged the embroidery hoop over my template and traced it exactly. Tip- you’ll find out if your pantyhose are pulled tight enough when you try and trace with your sharpie.

Third– Grab your paint brush and start painting with mod podge… only around your design. Which means you’ll need to leave the inside of your design (mine was the inside of the bunnies) untouched by the mod podge. Tip- you may need to apply 2 coats. It is very important that there are no open holes untouched by the mod podge. This will serve as your barrier between the shirt and the fabric paint.

Last– After your mod podge is dry (and do make sure it’s dry), now your ready for the real fun 🙂 Grab the fabric paint and squirt around the design inside the embroidery hoop. I wanted to have full control over how the paint was spread out. I used an old gift card to slide the paint across and make sure to get all the edges of the design (my 3 bunnies).

Finally– Add some detail. I thought it would be cute to have to rear facing because I love a fluffy tail and one with a bow tie!
